The Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) ETH in Robotics is a research-oriented programme in robotics and artificial intelligence. Your programme in a nutshell
The CAS ETH in Robotics is a highly personalised and flexible continuing education programme that builds upon your professional experience. It is tailored to your specific goals, with your chosen research project at the centre of a personalised study plan, designed in collaboration with a tutor selected from over 30 professors affiliated with the ETH+ initiative RobotX. Your research project is aimed at creating an impact beyond theory, ensuring you not only expand your knowledge but also gain valuable hands-on expertise.
Building on your strengths
The CAS ETH in Robotics aims to integrate practical industry experience with advanced academic research knowledge and expertise. It is ideally suited for professionals holding a Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences, or its equivalent, with a minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in the fields of robotics, automation, data science, AI, or related technologies. With a curriculum tailored to your needs and a central research project that can be flexibly chosen and aligned with your personal interests, the programme may yield tangible results that are mutually beneficial for both you and your employer.
What your programme provides
The programme workload is at least 12 ECTS credits, equivalent to 360 working hours. Your study plan, customised in collaboration with your tutor, will revolve around your research project. In consultation with your tutor, it may also contain lectures and seminars, as detailed below.
Research Project
Look forward to pursue a dedicated research project, selected in consultation with your tutor, in his or her lab. The subject may directly align with your company's interests or explore new areas you wish to engage with – you are free to choose.
Lectures
Depending on your project, you may choose to attend ETH lectures to acquire necessary prerequisites and deepen your understanding of state-of-the-art robotics and AI. For a comprehensive list of currently offered courses, please consult the ETH course catalogue (VVZ).
Seminars
In this dynamic, future oriented field, academic and practical interest often overlap. In our seminars, we invite all participants to facilitate an inspiring exchange of knowledge by sharing their practical industrial experience with one another and with us at ETH Zurich.
- An engineering or natural science Master's degree (or equivalent) recognized by ETH Zurich, with extensive industrial experience (at least 5 years) in the field robotics, automation, data science, AI, or related technologies.
- A letter of support from the current employer endorsing the candidate's participation at the programme.
- Advanced English language is required (C1-level). Tuition in German (C1-level required) is possible only after agreement with the tutor.
There is no automatic entitlement to admission.
- The cost of the programme is CHF 15,000. The whole fee is due at once.
- ETH Zurich charges registration fees for every online application ranging from CHF 50 to CHF 150.
- For withdrawing the application before or after acceptance, please inform us in writing immediately. Deregistration later than 60 days before the start of the programme is subject to a fee of CHF 8,000.
Admission
- The School for Continuing Education makes a preselection by checking all applications for completeness and fulfilment of formal criteria according to the application prerequisites and admission requirements.
- Each application is assessed and the final selection accordings to the admission rules is made by the programme management. The final admission decision is communicated by the School for Continuing Education.
The admission process is carried out continually throughout the year. Application to and start of the programme are possible at any time.
Decision, matriculation and withdrawal
You will receive a definitive written admission decision by the School for Continuing Education within eight weeks after submission of your application. With this, you are definitively accepted and matriculated at ETH Zurich. There is no need to confirm your participation. If, however, you decide to withdraw, we will need a written confirmation of this by the deadline mentioned in the acceptance letter. Withdrawal later than 60 days before the start of the programme is subject to a fee of CHF 8,000.
Persons who decide not to participate receive a written confirmation of cancellation.

Application process
- Complete the application online and pay the application and administration fees (non-refundable) by credit card. Applicants holding a degree from a Swiss university or Swiss university of applied sciences pay CHF 50; applicants holding a degree from another university pay CHF 150.
- Incomplete application dossiers will be rejected.
